# Advertising has arrived in ChatGPT and no large Spanish hotel chain is in yet
3 September 2026 · Joan Sanz · 6 min read

Quick answer

OpenAI now sells ads inside ChatGPT: minimum 15 EUR a day, no keywords, visible only on the free plan. The OTAs (Booking, Expedia, Tripadvisor) already buy. No Spanish hotel chain has tried it yet.

In five lines

- An ad in ChatGPT is a sponsored card under the answer, it never changes what the assistant replies.
- Title of 16 to 24 characters recommended, half of a Google Ads headline.
- Only users on the Free and Go plans see it. Plus, Pro and Business see no ads.
- You do not bid on keywords, you describe situations: "family with kids looking for a hotel with a pool near the cathedral in August".
- Booking already bids on the names of hotels that are not its own, several Spanish ones included.

## How an ad inside ChatGPT works

Six pieces, none optional: title, copy, a square image of up to 1200×1200, a reachable landing page not blocked to OpenAI's crawlers, and the advertiser with its favicon.

| Piece | Limit |
|---|---|
| Title | 16–24 characters recommended, 50 maximum |
| Copy | 32–48 recommended, 100 maximum |
| Image | PNG or JPG, square, max. 1200×1200, public |
| Landing page | Reachable URL, not blocked to OpenAI's crawlers |

The title limit is half of a Google Ads headline (30 characters). That changes the writing entirely: "Boutique Hotel in the Centre of Seville" does not fit.

### Who sees them, and this is the commercially awkward part

Only logged-in users on the **Free and Go** plans. Plus, Pro, any Business plan and accounts of minors do not see a single ad. Your highest-value customer may be on Plus. This channel does not reach all of ChatGPT, it reaches only the free part.

### The daily minimum, country by country

| Country | Daily minimum | Country | Daily minimum |
|---|---|---|---|
| Europe (EUR) | 15 € | Brazil | 40 BRL |
| United Kingdom | 15 GBP | Mexico | 150 MXN |
| Switzerland | 20 CHF | Japan | 2,500 JPY |
| US / Canada | 25 USD/CAD | South Korea | 25,000 KRW |
| Australia / NZ | 25 AUD/NZD | India | 725 INR |

**15 EUR a day is 450 EUR a month.** It is the number a small hotel needs to hear before any other.

### The real difference from Google Ads

**There are no keywords.** OpenAI uses *context hints*: descriptions of conversations. According to its documentation, context hints are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee delivery in specific conversations. There are three bidding objectives (CPM, CPC, oCPC), a maximum bid per ad group, a second-price auction weighted by relevance, and a recommended CPC of 3 to 5 dollars.

You do not bid on "hotel seville". You describe a complete situation, and the system decides when it fits.

## The OTAs are already in. Hotels are not

My own sweep of OpenAI's public ad library, with 26 travel advertisers searched across 15 topic queries, gives a clear map:

| Advertiser | Active ads | Markets |
|---|---|---|
| Booking.com | 30 (cap) | MX, US, AU, BR, CA, NZ |
| Expedia | 30 (cap) | US |
| Tripadvisor | 30 (cap) | US, AU |
| Trivago | 30 (cap) | BR, US |
| Radisson Hotels | 15 | US, NZ, AU |
| IHG | 12 | CA, US |
| Hilton | 10 | US, AU |
| Marriott | 4 | US |
| Meliá, RIU, Barceló, Iberostar, Palladium, Accor, Hyatt | 0 | none |

OpenAI's library returns 30 cards per page and does not paginate further: "30" means "the cap, there are more", so the order among the top ones does not indicate real spend.

### The finding that sells itself

Spanish hotel chains do not buy ads of their own, but **their hotels do appear advertised**. Booking pays for them. Verbatim entries from the library: `booking.com | Iberostar Paraiso Maya | Stay at Iberostar Paraiso Maya` and `booking.com | Grand Palladium Kantenah`.

**The OTA is bidding on the hotel's brand name.** It is the same old billboard effect, now inside a chat.

### How the ones who already know write their ads

| Pattern | Real example | Who |
|---|---|---|
| Question as title | `Best hotel at Stansted Airport?` | Radisson |
| Destination + intent | `Hotels in Seville, Spain` | Expedia |
| Hotel brand | `Iberostar Paraiso Maya` | Booking |
| Explicit budget | `Budget Hotels in New York` | Priceline |
| Timing | `Find Last-Minute Hotels` | Skyscanner |
| Direct versus OTA | `Direct booking gives the best rate` | Radisson |

**None of them sells "our hotel is wonderful".** They all answer a specific situation, which is the direct consequence of how context hints work.

### Spain and Spanish, specifically

With the queries `hoteles`, `alojamiento` and `viaje`, only Booking shows up, with copy in Spanish and everything pointing to Mexico. With `hôtel` and `ferienwohnung`: zero ads found. No Spanish brand advertising in any language.

**What cannot be concluded from this:** how much each advertiser spends, whether the channel works, or whether an ad is still active today. The trade press reports that traffic from Booking's assistant, paid and organic together, remains below 1% of booked room nights and has been stable at that figure for several quarters.

## What to do with this

Spain is on the list of countries with access to OpenAI's ad manager, the minimum is 15 EUR a day, and no large Spanish hotel chain is buying yet, as far as this sweep covers. That does not mean you should jump in now: it means the gap exists and nobody is measuring it yet.

What is defensible today: register your brand and your hotels in the ad library as an observer, even if you do not buy, to know if someone starts bidding on your name. And if you sell direct, watch whether your OTA starts showing up with your property's name before you do.

## Questions

**How much does it cost a hotel to advertise in ChatGPT?**

The minimum in Europe is 15 EUR a day, around 450 EUR a month. The CPC recommended by OpenAI is 3 to 5 dollars. It varies by country: 25 USD/CAD in the United States and Canada, 20 CHF in Switzerland, 725 INR in India.

**Who sees ChatGPT ads?**

Only logged-in users on the Free and Go plans. The Plus, Pro and Business plans and accounts of minors see no ads at all. It is a channel that reaches the free part of ChatGPT, not all of ChatGPT.

**Do ChatGPT Ads bid on keywords like Google Ads?**

No. OpenAI uses context hints, descriptions of conversations, not exact-match keywords. According to OpenAI, they do not guarantee delivery in specific conversations. There are three bidding objectives (CPM, CPC, oCPC) and a second-price auction weighted by relevance.

**Are hotels already advertising in ChatGPT?**

OTAs are: Booking, Expedia, Priceline, Hotels.com, Tripadvisor and Trivago have active ads. Among chains, only Radisson, IHG, Hilton, Marriott and Royalton Resorts. Melia, RIU, Barcelo, Iberostar, Palladium, Accor and Hyatt have no ads of their own, although Booking does bid on the names of their hotels.
